What is a god? In a generic definition it is a supernatural or superhuman being or spirit worshiped as having power over nature and human fortunes. In a more monotheistic view, it is the creator and ruler of the universe and the source of all moral authority. I believe that either definition is outdated and outmoded. I believe both definitions are insufficient. It’s not just that they are outmoded—no longer fashionable or useful—it’s that they are functionally incompatible with the universe as we now understand it. While those terms may certainly be applicable to our modern views of gods and religion, it is not the point I am attempting to make. I think that there is a need for the place that god and religion reside, but we need new and updated terminology and definitions that better match the evidence and knowledge we now have about the universe around us.
